Everyone is born with a dream, a path to follow. Sometimes you allow others to guide you rather than following your instincts. Your decisions are based on necessity rather than what is in your heart, this was the case for me. I was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and enjoyed a privileged childhood. Throughout my youth I enjoyed going to the cinema and dreamed of becoming an actor in Hollywood. At the age of twelve everything changed. The Russians invaded Afghanistan. I supported the resistance and became a member of the “Freedom Fighters”. Eventually we fled to Pakistan and then to the United States. I was not allowed to pursue my passion, acting, but instead was forced to work to support my family. Many years later, as an adult, I had the good fortune to meet someone who worked with a local production company. In our conversation, he mentioned my resemblance to Andy Garcia and also asked if I was interested in going to a casting call. It had been years since I had given any serious thought to acting but I went and got the job. I currently live in Orange County CA, and have continued working in television and movies. I was sidetracked for many years, but never lost sight of my dream.

Helpful Tips on ActingThere has been a lot of inquiry into how I became an actor. Here are some tips from my own experience 1. First of all you must have a sincere commitment to acting. You must absolutely love the art of acting2. You must invest in good headshots3. In order to gain experience and slowly build a resume start working as a background actor. Often times, by working as Background, you may be able to get an actual speaking part and become a day player. Once you have had one speaking part, you will be eligible to join SAG which is the Screen Actors Guild, a union for actors.4. Becoming a SAG member is important because only then you will be able to earn SAG rates also called scale and make good money.5. Working as a background actor also helps you eventually become eligible for SAG if you can accumulate 4 SAG vouchers. So, there is absolutely no shame in being a background actor as it will enable you to gain experience and eventually join the actor's union. Be aware that it may take months or years to accomplish this.6. In order to get background work (also called "extra" work) you should register with reputable casting agencies.7. Eventually you will need to get an Agent or Manager who will find you work for you and send you on auditions. This does not mean you shouldn't search for yourself and do your homework. 8. Once you are sent to an audition, you must be on time, have your headshots and resume, and must act and be professional at all times.9. Do not, and absolutely, Do Not try to give advice to the casting agents on anything. Just do as you are told, say thank you and goodbye and leave. 10. Going to auditions does not mean you will get the job. You may have to go to 20 auditions to get one or two jobs. 11. When you are hired to do a job, be professional and, again, do not tell the director or others in charge what to do, what is right or wrong, or how things ought to be. You will for sure be fired on the spot and never be called again. And in this business word gets around very fast. 12. Once you become a member of the actor's union SAG, you will have to pay a one time fee of $2300.00 and maintain your yearly dues. For more info visit www.sag.org. 13. Also, educate yourself regarding the business of acting and keep yourself informed by reading books and industry magazines such as The Hollywood Reporter, Backstage and so on. 14. And finally, you must have a flexible job that pays your bills and allows you to go to auditions. This is very important for your success. It takes a lot of time and serious commitment to become successful actor. One Final Note: Watch your back and open your heart in this business. Fahim Fazli
